The Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James will always be tied to one another.
He’s the greatest player in franchise history, and it’s virtually impossible for someone to take that distinction away from him.
That’s why some fans and members of the media have always fantasized about another reunion.
Nevertheless, even though recent reports showed that the Cavaliers reached out about a potential trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, that might not be in the plans right now.
An unnamed NBA scout recently dismissed the Cavs’ interest in bringing back James.
“I keep hearing their interest (in James) is minimal, if they have any at all,” the scout told Hoops Wire. “So I’m not even sure where that report originated. Who’s the source on it? Rich Paul’s cleaning lady?”
As good as it could be for PR and marketing purposes, it may not make sense for the Cavs in the long run.
James will turn 41 years old during the 2025-26 NBA season, and the team has been in a bad place the two times he’s left.
His relationship with the front office has also been a talking point too often.
Even if that weren’t the case, the Cavs would have to pay his huge salary for a one-year rental, meaning that in a trade they would have to break up their core.
James could’ve signed with the Cavs as a free agent if he wanted to, instead of picking up his player option.
He should always be welcomed with open arms in Cleveland, but unless he’s bought out by the Lakers, or returns someday as an affordable free agent, it might not happen.
