After months of being out of the public eye, Ricky Rubio recently returned to the basketball court to represent the Spanish national team at the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers.
Rubio retired from the Cleveland Cavaliers and NBA a few months ago after battling with mental health issues.
For the first time, Rubio spoke at length about those issues, according to a quote shared by NBACentral.
Rubio said:
“The player ate the person. I didn’t know who I was. It was a difficult moment for me. I had fear. You are able to handle your fears and play down them. Life is full of greys. But I have saved myself, and now I am at ease. I am proud of myself, and I give basketball a new chance.”
In response to Rubio’s very honest and brave statement, Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies sent his love, tweeting a blue heart and bullseye emoji, signifying that he totally agrees with Rubio and supports him.

Morant himself has publicly stated that he has mental health problems he is attempting to overcome.
When Morant was repeatedly suspended from the league for brandishing a firearm on social media live streams, he said adjusting to fame and the mental health strain it has put on him contributed to his actions.
During his suspension, Morant sought help for his problems and has seemingly put them behind him.
As for Rubio, he will no longer play in the NBA but it’s obvious that his love for basketball hasn’t disappeared.
Fans of Rubio are elated to see him playing again, even if it’s overseas.
More than anything, they are elated to see him looking happy and healthy.
