The Cleveland Cavaliers clearly have a plan and a vision.
Koby Altman talked about adding toughness and grittiness to the roster, and he did so when he traded for Lonzo Ball.
He added a big-bodied defender who can guard multiple positions and won’t back down from any challenge.
Nevertheless, Ball also comes with plenty of baggage.
That’s why it’s not much of a surprise to hear that the Cavs plan to err on the side of caution with him.
According to team insider Chris Fedor, the Cavs are already having conversations about not having him play back-to-backs and sit out some games when they don’t have a lot of rest between contests:
“I know that the Cavs are having conversations as an organization about no back-to-backs for Lonzo Ball,” Fedor said. “If it’s three games in four nights, be cognizant of that when it comes to Lonzo. If it’s five in seven, be cognizant of that when it comes to Lonzo.”
Injuries have prevented Ball from living up to his potential.
He was projected to be something like the second coming of Jason Kidd, and he’s always been efficient and an impactful player when he’s been on the court.
But after watching him miss two and a half seasons and draw some questions about whether he would ever return, his team needs to be extremely careful with him.
The Cavs also have Craig Porter Jr. and Tyrese Proctor on the roster, and they should be more than capable of holding down the fort as a backup point guard committee when he’s not available.
At the end of the day, they need Ball to be out there and healthy in the playoffs, and they must do whatever it takes to make sure he’s available by the end of the season.
