The race for this year’s MVP is incredibly tight, and it feels like it has come down to two players: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic.
However, Donovan Mitchell of the Cleveland Cavaliers has also been repeatedly mentioned as a potential MVP winner, although his chances aren’t as good as Gilgeous-Alexander’s and Jokic’s.
Mitchell recently talked about being MVP and why it may not happen for him this year.
He sounds okay with being passed over for that prize because he has his sights set on another.
“I think that’s how you associate the MVP, with high numbers, high usage. And that’s not always going to be me every night, and I’m OK with that,” Mitchell told Yahoo Sports. “Maybe because at the end of the day, if we go out there and win a championship, I’m not going to sit and say, ‘Damn, I didn’t win the MVP.’”
Like the rest of his team, Mitchell is completely and only concerned with winning a championship this year.
It would be nice for him to be MVP, but he’s more interested in getting his first title.
Right now, he has a much better chance of winning the Finals than winning MVP, which isn’t a bad thing according to Mitchell.
He is right when he said that the race for Most Valuable Player is usually about numbers, usage, and statistics.
Because of how his team works, his numbers might not be as high as other contenders for MVP.
He isn’t carrying his team, and the hard work for the Cavaliers is spread around and done by multiple stars.
That is the sign of a well-rounded and deep team, but it doesn’t always help in the race for MVP.
Mitchell probably won’t earn that trophy this year, but that doesn’t bother him, especially since he has a very good shot of being a champion.
