Donovan Mitchell gave it his all for the Cleveland Cavaliers this season, but it just wasn’t enough.
His team was taken down in five games by the Indiana Pacers, ending their season on Tuesday night in the second round of the playoffs.
Following that stinging loss, Mitchell spoke about his fellow players and made it clear that he thinks they have a specific “window” to win a championship.
“I’ll go to bat for every guy in that locker room,” Mitchell said. “Winning is not easy. Some things have to go right. You got to play well, got to capitalize on opportunities. We have a window with this group, I believe in everybody in here, we believe in each other. That’s what sucks, we’re a good team. And for five games … we didn’t show what we’re capable of. And ultimately that’s what we’re judged on.”
Mitchell said his team didn’t show what they were capable of, but he certainly did.
He averaged 34.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists during the series against Indiana, putting up multiple big-time games and leading his team in several ways.
He suffered through injuries to himself and others, and looked like a true leader.
Since joining the NBA, Mitchell has been a hero during the playoffs, although he has yet to win a title.
Mitchell will be back with the Cavaliers next season, but he admits that there is a finite amount of time before their championship chances dwindle.
Does that mean the front office will make big roster changes or slight tweaks to make the team better?
Is the window closing, or does Cleveland still have a few years to take home a championship ring?
