The Cleveland Cavaliers have to add more size and strength to their roster.
Their lack of a playable backup big man took a big toll on their chances against the Indiana Pacers in the playoffs.
With that in mind, they might turn to the 2025 NBA Draft.
According to Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report, they could get Australian PF/C Lachlan Olbrich, who had some impressive performances at the NBA Draft Combine:
“Lachlan Olbrich double-doubled in both NBA combine scrimmages and didn’t look out of place in spite of athletic limitations,” Wasserman wrote. “His instincts were evident and functional for timing dives to the basket, spin moves and offensive rebounds. He showed advanced footwork and body control to create separation and touch to convert from different angles.”
The Cavaliers don’t have a first-round pick this year, and unless they trade away one of their star players, that’s not going to change.
As such, they might have to settle for the older prospects who usually slip to the late second round.
Olbrich fits that bill, and while he doesn’t look like the strongest or most athletic big man out there, he’s more than capable of making an impact on both sides of the glass and knocking down shots.
He’s no ordinary rookie, as he comes with professional experience from overseas, and that could help make his transition to the NBA significantly smoother.
The Cavs still need to decide what to do with Jarrett Allen, who was a non-factor again in the playoffs and has been the subject of multiple trade rumors since their season-ending loss to the Pacers.
But regardless of whether they trade him or decide to keep him for a little longer, they desperately need to add more depth to their thin frontcourt, and Olbirch looks like a safe, NBA-ready bet in the late second round.
