The Cleveland Cavaliers need to consider all their options right now.
They failed to get past the second round of the NBA playoffs again, and it’s starting to become painfully evident that some of the players in their core might not have what it takes to get to the next level.
As much as fans have a right to be mad and frustrated, insider Chris Fedor believes the Cavs should double down on their commitment to Donovan Mitchell.
“When you’re competing for a championship, you need a guy like Donovan Mitchell. If you don’t have a guy like Donovan Mitchell, you lose leadership, you lose maturity, you lose stability, you lose your alpha,” Fedor said. “If you’re somebody who’s chasing a championship and you don’t know if you’re going to be around to see this thing through, because coaches change all the time. Front office executives, they change all the time. … You’re probably saying, ‘Let’s try and take our chances with Donovan Mitchell.’”
As things stand, Mitchell and Evan Mobley should be the only untouchable players on the team.
Mobley is arguably the most talented and most important player, and the Cavs should look to build the offense and roster through and around him.
But in the meantime, they will most likely get only as far as Mitchell can take them.
So, that should put plenty of weight on his shoulders.
He’s never added another layer to his game, and he’s pretty much the same player he was when he took the NBA by storm as a rookie with the Utah Jazz.
The Cavs need Mitchell to get in some faces and lead by example.
He’s a great teammate, a good player, and a good guy, but if they want to get to the next level, they need him to be much more than that.
