The Cleveland Cavaliers entered this offseason without a lot of money to spend.
They had to choose between Sam Merrill and Ty Jerome, and they traded Isaac Okoro to get Lonzo Ball.
So, reinforcements will have to come from current players.
With that in mind, they could turn to big man Nae’Qwan Tomlin.
According to insider Chris Fedor, Tomlin may be part of the plans for next season.
“Two-way forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin continues to turn heads. The organization believes in Tomlin and he may get consideration for regular-season rotation minutes,” Fedor wrote.
The Cavs called up Tomlin from the G League last season.
However, given how well the Cavs were playing in the regular season, it was hard to find minutes for young and unproven players, which is why he wasn’t on the court often.
He’s drawn buzz because of his work ethic and physicality, and he looks like the type of bully-ball player who will embrace competition as opposed to shying away from it.
Executive Koby Altman stressed the importance of adding toughness and grit to the organization, and Tomlin could provide that.
While not the biggest guy on the court, what he lacks in size, he makes up for with great timing and hustle on both ends, and his speed and athleticism help him stay in front of bigger opponents.
The Cavs need everybody to step up if they want to build on an impressive season, and Tomlin is the type of player who does the dirty work coaches love.
