The Cleveland Cavaliers are on the verge of championship contention.
As such, they should be looking to get better around the edges and get the role players they need to complement their stars.
However, they’re not like most 60-plus-win teams.
Instead, they might be looking at breaking up their core.
At least, that’s how Matt Fontana feels.
Talking on his show, he made a case for the team to give up on Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen, and while he doesn’t want to get rid of them just for the sake of it, he believes they can turn their contracts into another star to help their case:
“I would like the Cavs to figure something out here. I’ve seen this core four. I think I’ve seen enough. I think I know what they are. I’m not just giving away Jarrett Allen. I’m not just gonna give away Darius Garland, but if there’s an opportunity to get an elite guy back… I’m not anti-Giannis [Antetokounmpo]. I just don’t want to give up Evan Mobley. In two seconds, I’d hit yes on Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen,” Fontana said.
Would you be okay trading away any of the #Cavs core four? #LetEmKnow

Garland and Allen have always been good in the regular season, but they have failed to replicate that success in the playoffs.
They’ve had more than enough opportunities to prove the doubters wrong, yet they continue to underperform and be a liability when it matters most.
The sample size is big enough for people to have made up their minds about him, and the saddest part is that even opposing players might feel that way when they play against them.
You can’t win without competitors.
You can’t be a champion unless you want it more than everybody else.
It’s not enough to be good or well-coached or have a deep team.
Both of them should gauge decent trade value in return.
And if the front office can somehow package them and get a top-tier player, they shouldn’t even hesitate to pull the trigger.
