The Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t have a valuable pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
On top of that, this was one of the least impressive draft classes in recent history.
As such, it only made sense that they went after an NBA-ready player who could contribute right away.
Jaylon Tyson seemed to check that box.
He had been a four-year college player with a high basketball IQ and an NBA-ready body.
However, he’s barely cracked Kenny Aktinson’s rotation.
That’s why Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report gave the team a C+ grade in his latest report card of NBA rookies:
“Tyson, picked 20th, has seen at least 14 minutes in a game just twice this year. The 24 points he amassed in those two games account for over half of his total (42) on the season. It still seems safe to say Tyson has something to offer as a multi-skilled wing, but he didn’t get drafted by a team bad enough to let him show it. Clearly overqualified to be in the G League, Tyson could be showing rotation-level capability on another squad,” Hughes said.
Tyson has shown glimpses of strong play on both ends of the floor, but he’s barely seen the floor this season.
Also, with Max Strus back in the mix after missing the start of the season, it will be tough for him to find his way to the floor.
He’s a very intelligent player with above-average court vision, not to mention a willing passer.
He’s also physical and can make his presence felt on both ends of the floor.
Tyson is also a good slasher who excels at the dunker spot.
Nonetheless, unfortunately for him, the Cavs have been just too good this season.
He’s stuck in limbo because he’s better and more league-ready than the average G-League player, but the Cavs don’t need to disrupt their rotation or alter their plans to get him more playing time.
He’s in a good situation team-wise, but that’s not the best for him right now.
