The Cleveland Cavaliers needed another backup point guard and big man.
Unfortunately, they only had two second-round picks in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Even so, they managed to get an NBA-ready, savvy veteran with a strong pedigree when they got Tyrese Proctor.
The Duke product comes from a winning and proven program, and he’s more than used to playing with other stars and sharing the spotlight.
When asked what he would bring to the table as a pro, he sounded pretty confident about his ability to spread the offense with his shooting:
“Spacing the floor. I think I’m a really good shooter,” Proctor said when asked what he’ll bring to Cleveland. “Playing off the ball, playing different positions, and then just defensively, keep growing, keep learning defensively and just try and impact winning as much as I can.”
Proctor was an absolute sniper during his days at Durham.
He shot nearly 47% from beyond the arc, which looks tailor-made for Kenny Atkinson’s pace-and-space offensive system.
Of course, he will also face some tough competition for minutes.
Atkinson kept Jaylon Tyson on a short leash last season, so he might not be tempted to play rookies for long stretches.
Even so, the team doesn’t seem to be that high on Craig Porter Jr., so while Lonzo Ball should get the bulk of the run with the second unit, the door could be wide open for Proctor to crack the rotation as well.
Also, both Ball and Darius Garland have struggled with injuries for most of their career, so there will always be a chance that the team will have no choice but to turn to them.
Proctor’s sharpshooting skills made him an enticing prospect, and he could shoot his way to the court right out of the gate.
