Some NBA fans forget it, but there was a time when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Derrick Rose all played on the same team.
It was during the 2017-18 season, but the trio didn’t stick together for very long.
Now, former Cavs coach Ty Lue has opened up about why James, Wade, and Rose didn’t click.
“Bron gave [Wade and Rose] the leeway to do whatever they want, but I just think trying to figure it out, playing with each other, the spacing, the shooting, and all those components played a factor. And it just wasn’t a good fit. They could still play, it just wasn’t a good fit basketball-wise. And that’s just kinda how it didn’t work. But if I had a little bit more time, I would have been able to figure it out,” Lue said to Shannon Sharpe.
These players are three of the best NBA stars in recent memory, so fans were understandably elated when they linked up.
Cavaliers fans thought that a bright future was ahead, but it quickly became clear that things weren’t working.
This was for a number of reasons, like Lue said.
Just because a lineup is good on paper doesn’t mean it’ll work in practice.
Additionally, both Wade and Rose were nearing the end of their careers, and they weren’t playing like they used to.
They had to battle against age and injuries.
James, Wade, and Rose remain friends to this day, but they can admit that playing together on the Cavaliers wasn’t a success.
That doesn’t take away from their places in NBA history and their importance to the league.
It does serve as a reminder that even the best basketball players don’t always make magic together on the court.
