Before they worked out a trade with the Houston Rockets, there were a ton of rumors about the Phoenix Suns and what they would do with Kevin Durant.
The Cleveland Cavaliers were briefly talked about as candidates for Durant, and a potential trade package came to light.
Apparently, the package revolved around Darius Garland going to Phoenix and Durant and other assets heading to Cleveland.
Speaking on ESPN Cleveland, via RealCavsFans.com, Brian Windhorst talked about how it all came together.
“The Suns were the ones to reach out that had interest in Garland, it was not the Cavs that wanted to trade Garland,” Windhorst said.

Windy says Cavs interest was in Durant + assets (Suns own Cavs ‘29 1st) and the Suns didn’t hang up.

Windhorst stated that the Suns inquired about Garland, and it was the Cavaliers who came back with their demand: Durant and assets or no deal.
The Suns didn’t immediately hang up the phone, proving that they were curious about the deal, but it didn’t progress beyond that.
This is good news for loyal fans of Garland who wish to see him remain in Cleveland.
This is proof that the Cavaliers aren’t going to give up Garland unless they get a lot in return for him.
Therefore, the possibility of him leaving the Cavaliers this summer seems slim unless a monster package comes in exchange.
The Suns were interested, but not enough, and that is why this deal never came together.
They were fielding a lot of calls from multiple teams, and ultimately, they liked what they saw from the Rockets.
That is why Durant is now in Houston and Garland is still in Cleveland.
Based on this reporting, it sounds like he may be there for some time.
