There has been a lot of talk about how to make the Cleveland Cavaliers better this season.
Although many people would like the team to stay the same, some believe it’s time to break the squad apart.
Writing for Yahoo, Tom Haberstroh said the Cavaliers should contemplate sending Darius Garland to another team because the combination of him and Donovan Mitchell just doesn’t work in the modern NBA.
“Look, the team is paying its undersized backcourt, Garland and Donovan Mitchell, an astounding $276 million over the next three seasons, which is simply untenable. As we saw clearly this postseason, having two weak defenders on the perimeter will doom the Cavs in the modern ‘weak link’ NBA that marginalizes one-way players. Trading Garland to a team long desperate for a lead point guard, the Jazz, would quell that concern,” Haberstroh wrote.
The Cavaliers have committed a lot of money to the pairing of Mitchell and Garland, and it hasn’t paid off, at least not yet.
They are both individually good players, but working together hasn’t resulted in a lot of postseason success.
Many people say that’s because they lack the defensive prowess necessary in today’s NBA.
When they are together, there are just too many liabilities.
If the Cavaliers decide to move Garland, they can replace him with a player who is able to shoot well but also defend.
That could be a game-changer for this team.
The Utah Jazz are just one of the squads that would be intrigued by the idea of acquiring Garland, but will the Cavaliers listen to their offers?
This would be a major move, and Cleveland would need to handle it perfectly in order to make the most of it.
