The Cleveland Cavaliers need to take a hard look in the mirror.
Following another disappointing end to a campaign, they might have to realize that it’s time to make some changes.
Kenny Atkinson‘s lack of adjustments in the playoffs had plenty to do with this debacle, but once again, the players didn’t show much character when it mattered the most.
That’s a worrisome trend that dates back to the J.B. Bickerstaff days, so it might not have much to do with coaching.
With that in mind, and knowing how this business goes, Cavs G/F Max Strus acknowledged that this might be the end of the line for this roster:
“I just believe in this team. I believe in this locker room and this group of guys so much and the hard part about the NBA is you never know when you’re going to get that again. You’re never going to have the same team again. You don’t know what’s going to happen in the offseason. You might lose guys, your locker room could look different the next year. It was just a year where I think we could have done some big things and we didn’t do it,” Strus said.
The Cavs clearly have some good players, and they found plenty of success in the regular season.
They also showed strong chemistry when things were going their way.
Nevertheless, that’s also meaningless and pointless unless you do so when things are going wrong as well.
The fans and the front office have had a sample size that is large enough to realize that some of their star players aren’t cut out for the big moment.
It’s a shame, but it’s also a part of the game, and it’s not like opposing players can’t feel it, too.
The Indiana Pacers hit the court not hoping that they could upset the Cavs, but actually knowing it.
That kind of hunger, competitiveness, and determination can take a team a long way.
This core has been together for quite a while now, and the outcome is always the same, so it might be time to change some things.
