The Cleveland Cavaliers made quick work of their first-round matchup, delivering a clean 4-0 sweep against the Miami Heat with impressive performances on both ends of the floor.
Now with their opening series wrapped up, the team faces a different challenge: monitoring the health of their All-Star point guard heading into the conference semifinals.
Darius Garland has been sidelined for the past two games due to a toe injury.
His absence hasn’t slowed Cleveland’s playoff momentum, but questions about his availability loom large as the team prepares for tougher competition.
Coach Kenny Atkinson recently provided an update on Garland’s recovery progress through beat reporter Evan Dammarell of Right Down Euclid.
“#Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson said Darius Garland participated in some portions of practice but Garland didn’t participate in contact portions,” Dammarell shared. “Atkinson said that Garland is day-to-day and won’t decide Garland’s status for Game 1 based off one practice.”

The situation has been developing since before Game 4, when Garland was downgraded from questionable to out on the injury report.
He didn’t even go through his usual pregame routine before that contest. Despite missing their floor general, the Cleveland Cavaliers dominated the Miami Heat 124-87 on the road, showcasing their defensive prowess and depth.
Garland has been integral to Cleveland’s success this season, averaging 20.6 points and 6.7 assists across 75 regular season games.
His last appearance came in Game 2 of the first round, where he posted 21 points, nine assists and two rebounds while shooting 51.6% from the field and 41.2% from beyond the arc.
In his absence, backup guard Ty Jerome has stepped up admirably, while frontcourt stars Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley have elevated their games to help maintain the Cavaliers’ momentum.
