The Cleveland Cavaliers are doing better than they have in years for a number of reasons, including their unstoppable and determined players.
Speaking to Cleveland.com, head coach Kenny Atkinson opened up about the hard work and drive of Donovan Mitchell.
There is no doubt that Mitchell is an incredibly skilled player, but Atkinson says it’s his “humility” that sets him apart.
“But a big part of Donovan is his humility,” said Atkinson. “He wants to be part of something bigger than himself,” Atkinson said.
Mitchell is averaging 23.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game this season, which is definitely enough to lead the team and possibly be an All-Star.
But none of that goes to his head, according to Atkinson.
Mitchell is down to earth and close to his teammates.
He understands that basketball is a team sport and if the Cavaliers wish to make it all the way to the Finals this year, they will need all players working as a cohesive unit.
A true leader is someone who is able to function very well individually but also as part of the bigger picture.
Atkinson says that is exactly what Mitchell is doing.
Although Mitchell’s numbers may not be as high as they were last season, he is seen as a better teammate and the Cavaliers are clearly a much stronger team.
Every player on the roster is selfless and everyone wants to help one another succeed for the greater good.
That means their chemistry is top notch and that is a huge reason why so many people think they’re the real deal and could conquer the postseason in a few months.
