The Cleveland Cavaliers are in a bit of a tough spot right now.
They’ve exceeded most of the expectations in the first half of the season.
Perhaps not even the most optimistic Cavs fan foresaw this massive turnaround coming in Kenny Atkinson’s first season in charge of the team.
As such, plans might have to change.
The Cavaliers are in a tough spot financially, and the easiest way out of it would be to shed money and trade away some veterans.
Nevertheless, as pointed out by Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, that could send the wrong message.
Simply put, it would pretty much tell the players that they don’t believe they have what it takes to win an NBA championship this season:
“The players are smart. If the Cavs start shedding money before Thursday, they will know why. It isn’t a great message to send to a team trying to compete for a championship now,” Lloyd said.
The Cavs could move on from players like Georges Niang, Tristan Thompson, or Caris LeVert.
Nonetheless, they have all been significant contributors, both on the court and on the bench, thanks to their veteran leadership.
The front office has stated that they’re willing to spend big bucks to keep this team competitive, but we’ve heard that kind of story multiple times in the past.
The financial burden of keeping the roster as is would be too big to ignore.
The front office may believe that making slight adjustments to the roster won’t disrupt the team’s chemistry or its success on the court.
However, you never want to fix what’s not broken, and as good as this team has been this season, all teams are always a move away from disaster.
