The Cleveland Cavaliers have a lot of talent on their roster.
Unfortunately for them, it takes much more than talent to win in the NBA.
A team needs to be well-coached, which the Cavs are; stay healthy, which they didn’t; and get some lucky bounces.
Then again, above all that, players need to step up when it matters most.
That’s why Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com doesn’t think the Cavs will be able to get over the hump as currently constructed.
“I don’t think they have enough winning players, if we’re being perfectly honest about it,” Fedor said. “I think the number’s four. I don’t think that’s a great number for a team that has championship aspirations.”
Fedor pinpointed four Cavaliers he believes meet that threshold: Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Max Strus and De’Andre Hunter.
As harsh as that may sound, there is evidence to back it up.
There’s a long and well-documented history of instances when Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen have left plenty to be desired.
They have been non-factors in the clutch and the playoffs too many times, especially in elimination games.
No one denies their impact or their talent, which is why it’s so frustrating for fans to watch them fall from grace when the team needs them the most.
Unfortunately, that’s something that’s not easy to teach.
A player either has it or not, and until proven otherwise, too many Cavs look like players who don’t have it.
It takes everybody pushing in the same direction to win an NBA championship, and this team may need tougher competitors.
