The Cleveland Cavaliers need to add more grit to their roster.
Team executive Koby Altman admitted that the team lacked the toughness to get to the next level in the playoffs, adding that it would be a point of emphasis in the offseason.
With that in mind, Ethan Sands of Cleveland.com made a case for the Cavs to acquire Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls:
“I don’t think you understand how good this offense would flow with Lonzo Ball as an offensive facilitator and as a defensive stopper. He is the ideal backup point guard for this role,” said host Ethan Sands. “You get the passing of Tyrese Haliburton, and you get the defense of Alex Caruso. Not to mention his penetration is so good. Getting a foot in the painted area and then kicking out and his speed up and down the court. He’s one of my favorite players to just watch.”
Ball hasn’t lived up to the sky-high expectations, mostly because of his long and well-documented history of injuries.
Of course, that would be a perennial concern and something to keep a close eye on if the Cavs were to acquire him.
Then again, he’s always been an impactful player on both ends of the floor, and he’s just what the doctor ordered for this team.
He’s an elite playmaker and one of the best passers in the game.
He can stretch the floor with a couple of threes per game, and he’s an excellent rebounder at his position.
More than that, he’s an absolute pest on defense, and he can match up with bigger players because of his strength and quick hands.
Ball is signed through the 2026-27 season, but he’s got a club option for the last year of his deal, so he should be attainable.
Accommodating his $10 million-a-year salary might be tricky for the Cavs.
Also, the team would have to be extremely careful with him and his workload because of the injuries.
Still, he would be more than worthy of the risk.
