The Cleveland Cavaliers have to make some moves in the offseason.
The Cavaliers don’t have a lot of money to spend in free agency, so barring a major transaction, they will have to make marginal moves to improve their roster around their current stars.
They need to add toughness, athleticism, and defensive-minded players who can compete at a high level.
With that in mind, team insider Chris Fedor made a case for the Cavs to go after Trey Murphy III:
“Shooting, spacing, size, length, athleticism, a relationship with Donovan Mitchell. I just think [Trey Murphy III is] the kind of style of player that when you watch playoff basketball, whether it’s the series that just wrapped up between Indiana and New York or the previous one between OKC and Minnesota, you can just envision him thriving in that kind of environment,” Fedor explained.
On paper, Murphy checks all the boxes for this team.
For starters, he would bring in the mental toughness and grit that Koby Altman claimed this team needed.
He’s a versatile defender who can play and guard both forward spots and even some center.
He can knock down shots from beyond the arc, slash to the rim, and even finish above the rim.
The Cavs don’t need him to be much of a scoring force, but they will certainly welcome his sharpshooting expertise.
The New Orleans Pelicans will reportedly listen to offers for each and every single one of their players, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean they will actively try to move Murphy, they might listen to a reasonable offer.
Evan Mobley is the Cavs’ best player and should be the only untouchable player, aside from maybe Donovan Mitchell.
Adding a player with Murphy’s skills and style of play could do wonders for this team, even if that means giving up on re-signing Ty Jerome or Sam Merrill.
