The Cleveland Cavaliers entered their Friday night matchup with the Detroit Pistons intending to shrink their magic number, hoping to get one step closer to clinching the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
Having the No. 1 spot in the East is a big deal for many reasons, with the biggest being that it would guarantee them home-court advantage in the playoffs, at least until the NBA Finals.
While they hoped for a better result, the Cavaliers fell to the Detroit Pistons in this matchup, losing 133-122.

Fans weren’t happy to see this result, especially since every game means that much more at this point in the season.

Same thing different game. Awful free throw shooting, can't box out, bad defense. Never changes. Also why did Allen sit the entire fourth quarter?

Celtics schedule is super easy down the stretch. Cavs better get it together. It starts with defense and keeping teams off the offensive glass. Both categories have been atrocious lately. Stop being so nonchalant.

Would it be difficult for the Cavaliers to blow their lead in the Eastern Conference race at this point? Yes.
But, it’s certainly not impossible, and as one fan mentioned, the Boston Celtics’ schedule is much easier to close out the season.
If they get hot and only lose one or two games throughout the rest of the regular season, they might be able to overtake the Cavaliers for this pole position.
This could come down to the final game of the season, which would provide plenty of excitement heading into the playoffs, where many hope these two teams will meet in the Eastern Conference Finals, battling it out for a chance to make it to the NBA Finals.
It will be interesting to see if the Cavaliers adjust their strategy in the coming weeks to try and preserve this lead, or if they’ll just work to prepare for the playoffs and care less about the regular season.
