We haven’t seen a lot from Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Jaylon Tyson, but the young star shows promise.
Now that a few months have gone by, Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report graded this year’s NBA rookie class and took a good, hard look at each new player.
Writing about Tyson, Hughes went in-depth on his career so far.
“Picked 20th in part because he was viewed as a player who could help immediately, Tyson simply hasn’t gotten the chance. He often looks overqualified to be in the G League, so we can’t knock him too badly for happening to land on a team with too much talent to give him minutes,” Hughes wrote.
Hughes noted that Tyson didn’t earn 100 minutes until early December, which proves the Cavaliers weren’t using him much.
That isn’t a shock considering how deep and versatile the Cavs are this season.
Tyson had a very good game toward the end of November, when he scored 16 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out seven assists.
However, it’s not clear if we will see more from Tyson as the season goes on.
He will likely spend a lot of time in the G League, which is a bit of a shame, according to Hughes.
He claims Tyson is overqualified to be a G League player, but the Cavaliers just don’t have a lot of space for him right now.
With the return of Max Strus and the championship-caliber roster, the Cavaliers probably won’t be using a lot of Tyson, but he’s doing well so far.
