The Cleveland Cavaliers find themselves in a position they haven’t been in for quite some time.
They currently hold a 48-10 record, the best record in the Eastern Conference by a wide margin, and they have a narrow lead over the Oklahoma City Thunder for having the best record in the entire league.
Cavaliers fans have been pleasantly surprised with how the team has played, but no entity has been as shocked or shaken up by the team’s performance, who have significantly adjusted their numbers since the season started.
In an article on audacy.com, Ameer Tyree highlighted how far the Cavaliers’ odds were at the beginning of the season compared to now, a stark difference.
“Cleveland opened the year with +5000 odds to win the NBA Finals at BetMGM. The Cavs have watched their championship odds shorten significantly (to +225) since the start of their campaign,” Tyree said.
Being a +5000 favorite to win the NBA Finals is effectively a longshot, as sportsbooks are effectively daring bettors to chase the odds, knowing they aren’t likely to win the bet.
If Cavaliers fans or other bettors got in on this early, they could see extreme value if the Cavaliers do win the finals, seeing how they now have some of the shortest odds in the league.
While they might not have been favorites coming into the season, the Cavaliers continue to rely on a deep bench, strong play from their veterans, and a head coach who has his player’s backs.
Will this result in the Cavaliers’ first title since LeBron James left?
