The Cleveland Cavaliers are winning at a historic pace.
Kenny Atkinson’s team has been one of the best teams in NBA history, and the fact that they’re doing this in his first year in charge is as remarkable as it is encouraging.
As Cavs Notes pointed out on social media, they’re currently tied for the third-best start to a season in NBA history.
With their 30-4 record through 34 games, they trail only the 1966-67 Philadelphia 76ers (31-3), 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers (31-3), 1995-96 Chicago Bulls (31-3), and 2015-16 Golden State Warriors (32-2) for the best start to a campaign.
The only teams to start 30-4 or better in @NBA history:
GSW: 32-2 ('15-16)
CHI: 31-3 ('95-96)
LAL: 31-3 ('71-72)
PHI: 31-3 ('66-67)
CLE: 30-4 ('24-25)***
BOS: 30-4 ('07-08)
PHX: 30-4 ('04-05)
CHI: 30-4 ('96-97)
PHI: 30-4 ('80-81)
MIL: 30-4 ('71-72)
BOS: 30-4 ('59-60)#LetEmKnow— Cavs Notes (@CavsNotes) January 4, 2025
We’re talking about more than seven decades of NBA history here, and this cannot be overstated and should be discussed more.
Not many people thought this team would be this good this season.
While they should’ve always been in the mix for a playoff spot, not many analysts or fans ever thought they would have the absolute best record in the league when we’re just seven games away from the midpoint of the campaign.
While it’s highly unlikely that it will happen, they’re currently on pace to win as many games as the legendary Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls.
They could even end up catching the 73-9 Warriors.
Hopefully, whether that’s the case or not, this season won’t end like the 2016 Warriors did.
Staying healthy will be crucial to this team’s success for the rest of the way.
While they must make a couple of moves to bolster their wing defense before the trade deadline, they’re almost flawless right now.
