The Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t have many needs to address in the offseason.
They did a great job of finding another ball-handler and defender, essentially swapping Ty Jerome for Lonzo Ball.
However, according to Sam Amico of Hoops Wire, they are still looking to add a big man.
“If you remember last season, Kenny Atkinson kinda had to platoon Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley and keep one on the floor at all times because they didn’t have what they considered a reliable third-string center, power forward type. They’re gonna solve that problem, they believe, before camp. It may be during camp. It may be early in the regular season,” Amico said.
Perhaps that’s why they chose to bring back Larry Nance Jr.
Though he’s not much of an offensive factor, he’s always been a reliable scorer, and, more importantly, he’s a gritty and physical interior presence on defense.
He can also play power forward, so he technically fits the bill.
The Cavs have championship aspirations, so they could look to do better in that regard.
Then again, they don’t have many assets or much money to go after a major improvement.
They could give Nae’Qwan Tomlin an extended look in his second NBA season, but he’s a bit of a gamble at this point.
The Cavs will also most likely play De’Andre Hunter and Jaylon Tyson at power forward more often.
Whatever the case, they will keep an eye on available big men throughout the season.
Jarrett Allen is a very good player, but he’s failed to be at his best when it matters the most, and they can’t afford him to be a non-factor or a liability in the playoffs again.
