The Cleveland Cavaliers have the best record in the NBA.
The team has exceeded all expectations so far this season, and they look like a legitimate championship contender right now.
As such, one would expect them to be buyers at the trade deadline.
At the very least, one would assume that they won’t look to disrupt their chemistry by parting ways with any key contributors.
Nevertheless, that might not be the case.
According to a report by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, teams around the league believe that the Cavs will look to shed some salary.
While they reportedly stated that they would gladly pay the luxury tab if the team kept playing this way, the word around the league is that they won’t do it:
“Yet, with Cleveland roughly $1.9 million above the luxury tax threshold, NBA executives are monitoring whether Cleveland will try to duck the tax with a trade. Keep an eye on facilitating teams around the league looking to take on salary for future second-round draft capital to be in touch with Cleveland leading up to the deadline,” Scotto said.
The Cavaliers have several players who will hit free agency at the end of the season.
Ty Jerome, Sam Merrill, Tristan Thompson, and Caris LeVert are all playing in the final year of their contract.
Then again, it’s hard to imagine the team looking forward to parting ways with either of them.
The front office will have to make some tough decisions.
While the luxury tax penalties are steep and costly, it’s not often that you reach the midpoint of the season with 36 wins.
The Cavaliers have dominated teams from start to finish, and although they are currently facing a slight setback, it may be due to the numerous injuries they have incurred.
Once the team gets back to full strength, they should return to their dominant ways.
