The Cleveland Cavaliers needed Darius Garland to get back on the court in the playoffs.
They may have rushed him because they needed to be close to full strength to get back and beat the Indiana Pacers.
That wasn’t the case, and Garland will now be out 4-to-5 months after undergoing surgery to repair his toe.
With that in mind, NBA analyst Robert Watson put the team on blast for the way they handled his injury.
Talking on ‘The BIG Factor,’ he stated that the team knew that Garland wasn’t going to be close to 100%, yet they chose to put him back on the court:
“We talked about that game where all three people were out, and we looked at two injuries, and we said, ‘You know, they’ll probably be back up and running for the rest of the series.’ There’s obviously something they’re not telling us about [Darius Garland’s] toe. Why keep playing him if you know it wasn’t going to happen? And now, it’s going to carry over to next year. What did they hope to accomplish?” Watson said.

That’s fair on paper, but that’s just what everybody does in the playoffs.
Fans and analysts often question a player’s character when he doesn’t want to play through an ailment when it matters the most, and given Garland’s long and well-documented history of shortcomings in the clutch and big moments, that was also the narrative around him.
Garland had been playing through the toe injury for weeks before the playoffs started.
Offseason surgery is always a possibility, and the players have a full offseason to heal and restore their bodies.
The discourse would’ve been a whole lot different if the Cavs had gotten past the Pacers with Garland on the floor.
The players are getting paid tens of millions of dollars to perform in the playoffs, not in the regular season, and if they’re healthy enough to play, they need to suit up and play.
