If the Cleveland Cavaliers make any trades this summer, they have to be very careful about what they do.
If they don’t play their hand right, they could lose some of their best players and fall down the standings next year.
It is crucial that they are strategic.
Writing for Bleacher Report, Andy Bailey discussed a possible trade with the Orlando Magic.
In this hypothetical deal, the Cavaliers get Jalen Suggs, Jett Howard, and a top-five protected 2027 first-round pick, while the Magic receive Darius Garland.
“That’s what this one potentially does, giving Cleveland a much more defensive-minded guard to play alongside Mitchell in Suggs. Swapping him in for Garland would almost certainly slow the offense a bit, but the tradeoff might be worth it for a more viable playoff defense,” Bailey wrote. “As for Orlando’s side of the deal. Well, you get the picture by now. The Magic look primed to make a move for a point guard. And if Garland is available, they at least have to inquire.”
That’s not a bad deal for either team, but there is no guarantee that it’ll happen.
For starters, the Cavaliers might want even more than that haul for Garland.
He is one of their most important players, and it’s not clear if Suggs and everyone else can replace what Garland does when he is healthy.
Secondly, would the Magic want only one star in return for all of that?
There are upsides for both teams in this proposed trade, but it’s not as simple as that.
The Cavaliers and Magic are contemplating a lot right now and they should consider this, but they may not go for it.
