The Cleveland Cavaliers love the team they have now, but they know that they will need to make some tough financial choices soon to keep it.
One of the biggest revolves around Donovan Mitchell, who could be in line for a massive payday soon.
Writing for Bleacher Report, Eric Pincus talked about how much Mitchell could make and if the Cavs will be willing to pay him.
“Mitchell is nearing the end of his current deal and may extend again as early as next July. If he intends to stay with the Cavaliers, the team will presumably need to max him out, starting at $61.8 million for the 2027-28 season, climbing to $71.7 million for the 2029-30 season. Will a four-year extension in the $277 million range be too rich for the franchise? While the answer is ‘probably not,’ that hefty price may lead to pivoting with other players on the team (perhaps Darius Garland),” Pincus wrote.
Mitchell is definitely going to persuade the Cavaliers to give him a maximum contract deal.
He knows his value to the team, and he wants to get every penny.
Last season, Mitchell averaged 24.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists on 44.3 percent from the field.
Beyond the numbers, he was the team’s most important player and their captain, the one who led them through nearly every game.
The Cavaliers would love to keep this arrangement going, but it’ll cost them a lot.
In fact, Mitchell will be so expensive that they may have to cut ties with other players, such as Darius Garland.
But it could be worth it, and they might gladly sign a deal worth nearly $300 million for Mitchell.
This season will determine a lot for the path ahead.
Will Mitchell earn his extension, and will the Cavaliers decide which players have to leave in order to make that happen?
