The Cleveland Cavaliers have a true superstar in their ranks right now.
Evan Mobley took a big leap in his first season under Kenny Atkinson’s guidance.
That’s why, even though Donovan Mitchell is the most vocal leader and the leading scorer, Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report still believes that Mobley is the most impactful centerpiece of the roster:
“Evan Mobley,” Buckley wrote. “It’s really difficult not to go with Mitchell, since his stardom effectively validated their ascension, and his shot-making will play a massive part in whether their championship dreams are realized. And yet, the younger, cheaper Mobley might still wind up as the more impactful centerpiece. If the 24-year-old can further the offensive gains he made this past season, you could be looking at the kind of two-way versatility that allows him to thrive alongside players of all styles.”
Mobley had already shown that he was one of the most dominant defensive players in the game, but his offense had yet to catch up.
And while his scoring numbers were pretty similar last season, the way he scored wasn’t.
He was more aggressive, more efficient, and more dynamic.
He put the ball on the floor, used his left hand, and took better shots.
He also demanded the ball when it mattered most, instead of shying away or moving out of the way to let the guards do their thing.
Mobley may not have won Defensive Player of the Year if Victor Wembanyama had stayed healthy because of his raw numbers and big-name profile, but he’s by far one of the most disruptive defenders in the entire league.
The Cavs will reportedly have him bring the ball up the court more often next season, and having him add more layers to his offensive game will be crucial to this team’s success.
He’s one of the most talented two-way players out there, and even if Mitchell can go off for 30 points on any given night, this team will be better off building the offense and the roster around Mobley.
