The Cleveland Cavaliers have been the best team in the NBA this season, and it hasn’t been particularly close.
Nonetheless, even good teams can get better.
The Cavs still have some flaws to address, and with the trade deadline closing in, the front office will be hard-pressed to make a move.
With that in mind, Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report claimed that Cam Johnson could fix their woes:
“One of the biggest names on the trade market who should actually be moved, Johnson is averaging 19.6 points on 42.8 percent shooting from three. His scoring volume would certainly drop moving to this loaded Cavs team, although Johnson’s catch-and-shoot three success (43.5 percent) should only rise,” Swartz said.
On paper, Johnson is just what they need.
He’s a long forward who can play at the three and the four, and he’s proven to hold his own on the defensive end of the floor.
He made it to the league because of his sharpshooting skills, and he should have plenty of scoring opportunities from beyond the arc in Cleveland.
Johnson could be something like a taller and more efficient version of Danny Green, and those are the kinds of glue guys and role players that help teams win NBA championships.
On the downside, the Cavs might have to overpay for his services.
Multiple teams will be in the mix and trying to get a player with Johnson’s skill set, which will only drive his price up.
The Brooklyn Nets reportedly want at least two first-round picks or an equivalent value in return for the former Phoenix Suns draft pick.
The Cavs don’t have many assets to trade, and with the team winning 36 of their first 42 games, they know better than to break up their roster.
