Is it time for the Cleveland Cavaliers to break up their core four?
This has been the subject of a lot of rumors, speculation, and opinion, especially recently, when the team was pushed out of the playoffs before the Eastern Conference Finals.
Speaking to 92.3 The Fan, Jimmy Watkins said it is time to dismantle the core four in order to give Donovan Mitchell a better chance of winning.
“The answer is yes,” Watkins answered when asked if the Cavs should break up the core four. “What does internal improvement look like? How much time do you really have to do this? To me, the Cavs’ contention window exists as long as Donovan Mitchell is on the team, and we only have two more guaranteed seasons of that. Of course, as we know, that last year with a superstar, we don’t have a commitment from him, can get a little dicey. This team needs to show proof of concept way sooner than later, and there are not too many avenues of improvement besides breaking off a piece here,” Watkins said.
Watkins sees sending away Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, or Jarrett Allen as a way to give Mitchell a strong roster around him.
He said the team needs a “proof of concept” about where they want to go and what they wish to build.
They need to start proving that they are turning a corner right away, and they don’t have time to waste.
The good news for Cleveland is that if they commit to this path, they will have plenty of teams ready to pick up the phone and talk to them.
