The Cleveland Cavaliers needed Darius Garland when it mattered most, but he was a shell of himself in the 2025 NBA Playoffs because of a toe injury.
Now, that injury might prevent the team from getting what they need from him again.
Garland will be out for a while after having surgery to address the injury, and that may have killed all hope of trading him this offseason.
Analyst David Campbell said Garland’s trade value has taken a massive hit because of the injury and his postseason shortcomings.
“I just don’t see that deal. I don’t see a Garland deal happening now after all this stuff that’s going on. His trade value is the worst it’s going to be right now with the injury, the playoffs, the back-to-back playoff years where he’s struggled. Who knows when he’s going to be playing? They’re not going to get maximum value,” Campbell said.
The Cavs could have, and maybe should have, explored all their options for potentially trading Garland, but that doesn’t mean they desperately need to get rid of him or give him away for spare parts.
He may not have what it takes to be a leader on a contending team, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good and valuable player.
As such, it would be a disservice to accept less than he’s worth.
The Cavs reportedly have never seriously considered trading Garland, and they’re likely not going to do so now unless they can get the pieces they need to reach the next level.
Unfortunately for those who want the team to shake things up and finally move on from what hasn’t worked in the playoffs, Garland likely isn’t going anywhere for now.
