The Cleveland Cavaliers put together a strong team.
They doubled down on this core of players because they thought they could get over the hump with some more playoff experience.
However, not even changing coaches was enough to get this team to the next level.
That’s why Jimmy Watkins of Cleveland.com isn’t so optimistic about this team’s future, at least unless the front office is willing to make some major moves:
“If Minnesota needs to take a hard look at their roster after two straight Western Conference finals appearances, what does that say about the Cavs after two straight five game losses in the second round of the Eastern Conference?” Watkins asked.
No one can deny or doubt that Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland are very good players.
It would also be unfair to put all the blame on them.
Nevertheless, this has been a worrisome and evident trend for three consecutive years now.
They’ve either been hurt or have struggled in the playoffs, and they’ve been even worse in elimination games.
It takes much more than chemistry, talent, and hard work to thrive in this league.
Even future first-ballot Hall of Famers like James Harden have been under heavy fire for their constant struggles in the playoffs, and it’s not like anybody could argue that Harden isn’t an elite player.
You need competitors and players who take their game to the next level when it matters most.
The sample size is big enough to realize that this might not be the case with some of the Cavs’ stars.
Sometimes, you need to take a step back to take two steps forward, and the Cavs will have to have some uncomfortable conversations as we head to a crucial offseason.
