The Cleveland Cavaliers are a great team on paper.
Outside of a backup big man, they have pretty much everything they need to compete for a championship, including three potential 20+ PPG scorers.
However, for whatever reason, they keep falling short when it matters most.
Even so, some aren’t ready to give up on this core and Koby Altman’s vision.
Fair enough, he’s earned the benefit of the doubt after watching the team dominate through the regular season.
Then again, as good as they were, it’s also clear that they need to do something.
That’s why NBA analyst Matt Fontana urged the front office to make a splash in the offseason, even if there doesn’t seem to be a clear path to do so right now:
“I want the Cavs to do something, I do. Whether that is actually feasible, I don’t know, but I need the Cavs to do something. How this team is going to be viewed, and how Koby Altman, I really think is going to be viewed in the grand scheme of things, you built an amazing team,” Fontana said.

The Cavs don’t have much – if any – money to spend in free agency, and they might have a tough time retaining their own free agents unless they make some moves.
They also don’t have a first-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which further limits their ability to make a big trade.
As things stand now, their best shot at making a big splash will be to trade either Darius Garland or Jarrett Allen, but, again, that would technically be breaking up their core.
It seems like there’s no way to simultaneously improve what they have without giving up one of their stars.
So, instead of fetching big names, this team might be better off pursuing championship-caliber role players.
