The Cleveland Cavaliers seemingly had it in the bag on Tuesday night during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, but then they gave a victory to the New York Knicks, who erased a 22-point deficit.
Following the game, Cleveland’s leader and star player, Donovan Mitchell, had a few things to say about his team’s collapse. He admitted that they messed up, but urged himself and his fans to keep motivated about Game 2 and beyond.
“Keep your head up and go from there. Don’t let one quarter affect you for the rest of the series. It’s a long series. There’s things that we can do,” Mitchell said.
“We lost. We f—–g blew it. Simple as that,” he added.

There were just under eight minutes left to play, and the Cavs held a 93-71 lead over New York. It looked like they were going to steal a pivotal victory to start the series. Most people had given the Knicks the edge, and so it was going to be a massive underdog win for Cleveland.
But then the Knicks did what they often do, and Jalen Brunson couldn’t be stopped, once again. Because of that, New York was able to work back into contention and then force overtime.
When the extra period started, the Knicks didn’t go any easier on the Cavs and started things off with a 9-0 run.
Mitchell did his part for most of the game, scoring 29 points. Perhaps that is part of the reason why he is maintaining confidence in his team. He knows what he and his teammates can achieve, as long as they don’t get lost in their heads and feel too dejected by this defeat.
However, the Knicks are now on a high after winning eight straight games, and they will host Game 2 as well on Thursday night. They will be feeling supremely proud of themselves and ready for more. Mitchell isn’t happy about the loss, but he knows it’s not the end of the series.
Plenty of teams have come back from bigger holes, but it’s vital that the Cavaliers don’t make the same mistakes in Game 2.
