The Cleveland Cavaliers made a roster adjustment the other day, and it could have big implications in the playoffs.
The Cavs signed Chuma Okeke to a standard deal, giving him their final roster spot just weeks before the postseason.
Chris Fedor dug into why the team chose Okeke and what he can bring to the team.
“The idea of Chuma is logical. He shot it well in the G-League this season, and he’s looked at as a 3-and-D type player; he can guard multiple positions, he has a high basketball IQ, and he has a first-round pedigree. Length, size, athleticism on the wing—you can’t have enough of that on your roster,” Fedor said.
Okeke is a 6-foot-6 power forward who can do a lot of things on the court.
As noted by Fedor, he shot well in the G-League this year and could be a key 3-and-D player who is versatile.
The Cavaliers must have as many options as possible during the playoffs, especially coming off the bench.
Their plan is to go all the way to the NBA Finals, which means they need depth in their roster so that other players can rest.
Okeke spent some time with the Philadelphia 76ers this season, averaging 6.9 points and 6.1 rebounds during his seven games.
He hasn’t been able to find a consistent and long-term role on any team.
In all likelihood, he won’t play a major role with the Cavaliers for the rest of the season, but he will give them insurance and backup support.
Because of the road that might lie ahead, that is exactly what Cleveland needs right now.
