The Cleveland Cavaliers made another big move.
Adding Javonte Green may not have made a lot of headlines, but it could end up being quite impactful for this team.
He’s a strong, pesky, and physical defender who can hold his own against multiple positions, and he brings the kind of grittiness this team needs.
According to a report by Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, coach Kenny Atkinson was the biggest advocate for his services.
Apparently, Atkinson was heavily involved in the team’s pursuit of their swingman.
“Sources tell cleveland.com that the Cavs, with coach Kenny Atkinson as a primary advocate, discussed the possibility of trading for Green ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline. During those conversations, they started getting a sense that Green could be headed for a buyout. When the buyout materialized, sources say Atkinson reached out to Green, expressing interest and chatting about a variety of topics, many of which went beyond basketball,” wrote Fedor.
Green has never been known for his offensive prowess, but he’s capable of putting up points if need be.
He can slash and be an interior presence, and he can knock down an occasional shot every now and then.
Then again, that’s not what they got him for.
The Cavs needed more toughness and another defensive-oriented forward to match up with the likes of Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown.
Now, with De’Andre Hunter, Green, and Dean Wade, they will have multiple bodies to throw at opposing wings, sending them different looks.
The Cavs have been the best team in the Association this season by a sizable margin, but that doesn’t mean they’ve been a flawless team.
Fortunately, the front office didn’t rest on their laurels, and they managed to get under the luxury tax and address the few needs they had.
