The Cleveland Cavaliers have been the best team in all of basketball for most of the season.
That’s not an opinion; that’s what the numbers say.
Nevertheless, despite being the No. 1 team in the Association for months now, they still don’t get enough love and credit around the league.
That’s usually what happens with small market teams, much more so when they don’t have a top-ten player.
That’s why it’s not much of a surprise to see that Donovan Mitchell is currently No. 5 on ESPN’s MVP ladder.
The former Utah Jazz combo guard is behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jayson Tatum, respectively.
Granted, Mitchell’s numbers aren’t as good as the other players aforementioned, but there’s no objective criteria to determine the actual MVP.
Some believe it should go to the best player on the best team, and if that were to be the case, then Mitchell and Gilgeous-Alexander should lead the way.
Others argue that it should be the player who makes the biggest impact on his team, but that means it could go to a player on a losing team.
Others say it should go to the best player overall, regardless of the context.
Whatever the case, the Cavaliers aren’t going to lose any sleep over this.
If anything, the constant snubs, doubts, and disrespect should only fuel their fire, motivate them to be at their best, and prove the doubters wrong.
The only thing better than an MVP is a Finals MVP.
