Darius Garland will likely miss the start of the upcoming NBA season, which means the Cleveland Cavaliers will have to figure out some roster changes.
How will they fill the void left by Garland?
Speaking on the Wine and Gold Podcast, Chris Fedor talked about simply moving a few players to other positions in order to pick up the slack left by Garland’s absence.
“I think you move Donovan one spot over, make him the point guard, Max Strus to the two guard and then find somebody to fill in at small forward temporarily,” Fedor explained, outlining what he considers the most “seamless” solution to who starts at point guard.
In many ways, moving Donovan Mitchell to the point guard position, a role usually played by Garland, makes a lot of sense
Throughout his career, Mitchell has shown that he has brilliant play-making abilities.
He is smart on the floor and knows how to plot plays, find teammates, and get the ball where it needs to be.
In the NBA, the point guard can often act as the team’s general, the leader who pushes his squad forward.
Playing point guard will give Mitchell the ability to fit that role and help his team.
This would also give Max Strus a chance to show that he is healed after only playing in 50 games last season, starting in 37 of them.
The worry is that Mitchell at the one spot and Strus at the two doesn’t work, and then what will the Cavaliers do?
They cannot rush Garland through his recovery and need to let him heal naturally.
