The Cleveland Cavaliers have a potential superstar on their roster, and it’s not Donovan Mitchell.
It took him a while, but Evan Mobley finally proved that he can be one of the best two-way players in the game.
Now, with Donovan Mitchell struggling with inefficiency and Darius Garland not being a factor in the playoffs again, it’s become all the more evident that the Cavs need to build through and around Mobley.
With that in mind, former NBA champion Robert Horry urged the Cavs’ guards to get him more involved in the offensive game.
Talking to Nick Wilson and Jonathan Peterlin on 92.3 The Fan, Horry claimed that Mobley had proven that he could hold his own on offense and be an efficient scorer, so it was up to Garland and Mitchell to put him in a position to succeed:
“Here’s the crazy part, it’s up to Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell,” Horry said of how the Cavs can unlock more of Evan Mobley. “They got the ball in their hands 90% of the time. You got to put Evan Mobley in a position to be successful. You need a guard to put him in a position to be effective, and when they used him, his numbers were up, so you gotta use him. They gotta use the dude. That’s the biggest key,” Horry said.
Garland and Mitchell look like finished products.
Neither of them has added more layers to their games since they entered the league, and they might be closer to their peak than to unleashing another aspect of their games.
Mobley, on the other hand, is still growing and learning the ropes of the game.
He can swat shots and guard one through five like the best of them, and he finally expanded his range as a three-point shooter this season.
The Cavs need to consider all their options with their core four and making moves, but regardless of who they get, Evan Mobley should be the centerpiece of what they do.
