The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics are still a few years away, but Team USA is already dreaming up which NBA superstars will play for them.
Writing for CBS Sports, Colin Ward-Henninger mentioned Donovan Mitchell of the Cleveland Cavaliers as a potential member, and he said it’s shocking he hasn’t already represented America at the Olympics.
“It’s hard to believe that Mitchell has never made an Olympic roster, having previously said that it ‘means the world to play for Team USA.’ Unfortunately his only memory with them is taking a disappointing seventh place at the 2019 World Cup. He could be in line for redemption in 2028, as Team USA will need to fill the scoring void left by James, Curry and possibly Durant. The first-team All-NBA guard averaged 24 points and five assists for the Cavs last season, while showing a willingness to sacrifice individual statistics for winning — exactly the mentality he’ll need in his first Olympic appearance,” Ward-Henninger wrote.
Team USA has a few positive things going for it.
At the top of the list is the fact that the 2028 games will be held in LA, which means NBA stars won’t have to travel far to participate.
On top of that, it’s always a huge honor to play on behalf of the US, so many people will jump at the chance to play.
They will have some big voids to fill because LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant probably won’t be a part of the Olympics in 2028.
Mitchell has previously stated that he’d love to play in the Olympics, but the roster has never had the space for him.
But there is going to be more space in a few years, and Mitchell has plenty of time to continue to prove himself as the sort of leader that Team USA needs.
Will he finally get his wish and the chance to make his country proud in 2028?
