Not so long ago, NBA fans were urging the Cleveland Cavaliers to break up their backcourt.
It seemed like Donovan Mitchell’s presence was hurting Darius Garland’s development, and some thought they couldn’t coexist.
Fast forward to today, and they’re one of the best backcourts in the game, and their confidence seems to be at an all-time high.
Notably, that seems to be especially true with Garland, who’s never been aggressive or outspoken.
In a recent appearance on FanDuel TV’s ‘Run It Back,’ Garland didn’t hesitate to include himself among the three-best ball-handlers in the league (via Dillybar 2145):
“Me, Ky [Irving], and Steph [Curry],” Garland responded to Lou Williams when asked who the best ball-handlers are in the league.

It’s hard to disagree with that list, at least when he’s at his best.
Garland has taken a big leap under coach Kenny Atkinson.
He’s been more assertive on and off the court, making the most of his handles to create off the dribble, get to his spots, and find his shot.
He’s also shut down the narrative about him and his character by being one of the leading scorers in the clutch this season.
Unfortunately for him, that might not be enough for people to believe in this team.
All season long, their doubters have claimed that they don’t have what it takes to take care of business in a seven-game series against another championship contender.
Garland has a long history of shortcomings in the postseason, and what he does from now on will be crucial to make or break his reputation in the league.
He’s already talked a big game with this statement, so he now has to put his money where his mouth is.
