Even though some detractors and critics feel they will fall apart and start losing more games, the Cleveland Cavaliers remain the best team in the Eastern Conference.
Their 48-10 record says it all and they are still 6.5 games ahead of the second-place Boston Celtics.
Although multiple players in the lineup are performing very well, only one is currently in the race for this season’s MVP.
NBA.com released their latest MVP Ladder, via NBACentral, and Donovan Mitchell remains the seventh spot on the list.
Ahead of him is Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Nikola Jokic.
And behind him are Karl-Anthony Towns, Cade Cunningham, and Jaren Jackson Jr.
https://t.co/wWGNmWoaNH’s updated MVP Ladder:
1. Nikola Jokic
2. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
3. Jayson Tatum
4. Giannis Antetokounmpo
5. LeBron James
6. Anthony Edwards
7. Donovan Mitchell
8. Karl-Anthony Towns
9. Cade Cunningham
10. Jaren Jackson Jr.— NBACentral (@TheDunkCentral) February 28, 2025
Mitchell has sat around that spot for a few weeks now without movement, so it seems unlikely that he will climb much higher.
The competition for this year’s Most Valuable Player is intense but it’s once again come down to basically two people: Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokic.
Unless something wild happens, one of those two will win the top prize.
But for Mitchell, simply being included in this list is a huge honor and really a sign of how well the team is doing.
He is representing the whole squad in a sense, which makes his place on this list even more important.
For the season, Mitchell is averaging 24.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from the three-point line.
He might not end up winning MVP but he is a centerpiece of the league’s best team and has been helping them thrive all season long.
