The Cleveland Cavaliers recently turned to rookie Jaylon Tyson when Darius Garland sat out for rest in the first game of a back-to-back.
The No. 20 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft made his second career start count, putting together a well-rounded performance with four points, five rebounds and four assists against the Miami Heat.
Though the numbers weren’t flashy, Tyson’s impact went beyond the box score, and one analyst sees an opportunity for the Cavaliers to maximize his potential.
“Showcase Jaylon. You know, he’s been impressive to this point for being a late first-round pick,” Jason Lloyd of The Athletic said, via the “Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show.” “… So given the injuries that they’ve had, they’re gonna be without Dean Wade for a while. [Isaac] Okoro’s down. There’s certainly a spot for Jaylon Tyson. So play him, showcase him, and see if you can drum up any interest in him.”

Tyson has shown flashes of promise whenever he’s gotten minutes.
His versatility, rebounding prowess and ability to adapt to different roles have been noticeable.
However, with the Cavaliers focused on immediate success, they might not have the patience to wait for Tyson’s development.
The timing of Tyson’s increased role is noteworthy.
This marked his first start since his memorable NBA starting debut against the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 20.
He made the most of the latest opportunity, helping Cleveland dominate the boards with a 47-35 rebounding advantage while the team forced 14 turnovers and committed just seven.
With the Cavaliers’ wing rotation depleted by injuries, Tyson could see more meaningful minutes ahead.
Wade’s re-evaluation is weeks away, while both Okoro and Caris LeVert remain on the sidelines.
Given the team’s limited trade assets, Tyson’s performances during this stretch could make him an intriguing piece in potential discussions as the NBA deadline nears.
