For years, the Cleveland Cavaliers knocked on the door of playoff contention.
They were a playoff team for the most part, but they didn’t seem to be much of a legitimate threat to go the distance.
While talented, it seemed like they needed their young players to take a step forward.
That’s been the case this season.
Finally, Evan Mobley has taken a big leap on offense.
When asked about his breakout season, the former lottery pick claimed that it all had to do with how confident he’s been in the work he’s been putting in (via Cleveland.com).
βItβs the confidence in my work that I have put in over the years,β Mobley said. βIβm going to keep putting in the work and trusting the process.β
Mobley has always had a high ceiling but wasn’t aggressive on offense.
He’s now thriving in Kenny Atkinson’s offense.
He’s asking for the ball in key moments.
He’s even going to his left and putting people on posters with his left hand.
More than that, Mobley has finally made strides as a three-point shooter.
He’s taking better shots, making better decisions, and confidently stepping out to the perimeter instead of taking long twos.
He’s also become much more efficient in the elbow and the post, making the most of his size advantage against smaller defenders.
Donovan Mitchell is the best player on the team, but Mobley might be the most important.
Having him unleash and uncover new layers to his game has been crucial to this team’s success.
While plenty of basketball remains to be played this season, he should be in consideration for multiple awards and an All-NBA and All-Defensive selection at the very least.
