Cleveland Cavaliers fans are definitely concerned about the future of Donovan Mitchell with their team.
There has been a lot of talk about Mitchell departing the Cavaliers for another team, especially if the Cavaliers don’t continue winning for the rest of the season.
Speaking to ESPN Cleveland, Brian Windhorst gave insight into what the Cavaliers need to do to retain Mitchell beyond this season.
He said that Mitchell will have to be “happy and believing in the future” of the organization when the summer begins; otherwise, he will likely cut ties and set out for another franchise.
The questions about Mitchell have been swirling since the start of the season when the team failed to sign him to a contract extension.
The talk only got louder when the Cavaliers started the season in a rough way and suffered a number of painful and preventable losses.
Recently, the Cavaliers witnessed both Evan Mobley and Darius Garland suffer very serious injuries and both players will be sidelined for a while.
When that happened, some people thought that Mitchell’s exit was all but assured because victory seemed out of reach.
However, the Cavaliers have actually flourished since those two players went down and it’s given people hope that maybe Mitchell will find more faith in his team and decide to remain.
Cleveland is currently the sixth-best team in the East, although many people thought they’d be doing much worse after Mobley and Garland got hurt.
Could Mitchell be feeling the required sense of happiness and belief in his team after this latest stretch of games?
In all likelihood, he will remain with the Cavalier until the summer and then size up his options.
Right now, the team is playing well even with the absence of two of its biggest stars but can they keep it up until the offseason in order to keep Mitchell on board?
