The Cleveland Cavaliers would love to have another big man in their lineup, but what’s the best way of making that happen?
Writing for Hoops Wire, Sam Amico came up with an idea that could work out very well for Cleveland.
He proposed that the Cavs swap Dean Wade for Dwight Powell, currently of the Dallas Mavericks.
“The Cleveland Cavaliers could use another big body behind Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. The Dallas Mavericks, in the middle of reshaping their roster around Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg, may have interest in Dean Wade. In my proposed one-for-one swap, Cleveland would send Wade to Dallas for veteran power forward/center Dwight Powell. A dependable veteran who has spent a decade in Dallas, Powell brings size, screen-setting, and playoff experience — attributes Cleveland could use in reserve minutes behind Allen. Powell’s expiring deal also offers financial flexibility if the Cavs decide to explore other options in free agency next summer (as I’m certain they will),” Amico wrote.
Powell could be just what the Mavericks need with his years of experience and, more importantly, his size.
And although the Cavaliers would miss Wade, there might not be any other way to make this happen without including him.
He is entering the final year of his contract and is going to make just under $7 million in the new season before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
He has been a huge benefit for the Cavaliers, but they are willing to tweak their roster to get better.
One of the biggest holes in their lineup is in the frontcourt, so bringing Powell into the mix might be too enticing to pass up.
The Cavaliers want to bring more help to Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, and this could be the smartest way to do that.
