No one expected the Cleveland Cavaliers to do a lot during the summer, considering they were the best team in the Eastern Conference last year.
But they didn’t remain completely still and made some minor adjustments.
In a new piece at NBA.com, the team was graded for its offseason changes and gave special praise to incoming guard Lonzo Ball.
“Key Addition: Lonzo Ball,” wrote NBA.com staff. “The player Chicago swapped Okoro for? Ball, who brings playmaking and pace to a Cleveland offense that scored an NBA-best 121.9 ppg last season. The Cavs also added Larry Nance Jr., though they lost Ty Jerome in free agency. With their All-Star core returning following an East-best 64-18 record, Ball and Nance will look to give Cleveland additional firepower for a deeper playoff push.”
Ball comes with a lot of question marks floating over his head, but he could be just what the Cavs need.
Last season, he averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists on 36.6 percent from the field.
He was coming back into the league after a couple of years away because of a very serious knee injury, and Ball wasn’t completely healed and was still finding his footing.
Ball could be an excellent ball-handler for the Cavaliers, and swapping Isaac Okoro out for him might be a great idea.
Of course, there are concerns that he will still be hurt and won’t be able to play often.
But the Cavaliers are viewing him as a backup guard, someone who doesn’t need to spend all 48 minutes on the court night after night.
In that capacity, he could be perfect for Cleveland.
The return of Larry Nance Jr. could also prove beneficial for the Cavaliers, and these two might give them a lot more depth and reliable players who can keep the team competitive.
